Rivers Whales finish Teqball Championship with one gold and two silver medals

 

In their first ever national appearance, Rivers Whales Teqball team clinched one gold and two silver medals at the 2024 Teqball Championship World Qualifier held in Aba, Abia State. 

Whales' Captain Ibinabo Alex Georgewill and Gladys Abasi defeated Aganmuyi Omokehinde and Ukam Jennifer of Ondo State 2-0 to win gold in the Women's Doubles event. 

Participating in three finals out of the five events of the Championship, Ibinabo Geogewill lost to Nigeria's female number one Rashidat Bukola Salal of Abia State 2-0 in the Women’s Singles final. 

Rashidat Bukola, who's also Africa’s number one in Mixed Doubles event, lived up to her reputation after she combined with her Abia teammate and Nigeria's men’s number two ranked Teqer Funsho Samson to beat Team Rivers' duo of Gladys Abasi and Efosa Austin Obosa 2-0 in the final of the Mixed Doubles events. 

Out of the five gold medals available at the Championship, hosts Abia and Delta State won two gold medals apiece while Rivers State grabbed the remaining gold securing a spot in the Teqball World Championship in the United States of America.

Team Abia won gold medals in the Women’s Singles and Mixed Doubles events while Delta State clinched gold in the Men's Singles and Men’s Doubles categories. 

Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, the Hungarian Ambassador to Nigeria, Abia State Sports Commissioner Mr. Nwaobilor Ananaba and the Vice President of the Nigerian Teqball Federation, Ndudi Edede, were among dignitaries who graced the finals and closing ceremony of the event at the Aba Sports Club.

Governor Alex Otti pledged continued support to the development of the game of Teqball in Abia State.
